How the commute cost is calculated
A commute costs you twice: once in money and once in hours you never get paid for. A 35-minute trip each way, three days a week, adds up to more than 160 hours a year. That is four working weeks spent in traffic or on a platform, before anyone counts fuel, fares, parking, or the lunch you would not have bought at home.
Hours per year
office days per week × working weeks × 2 trips × one-way minutes ÷ 60
Cost per office day
car: 2 × distance × cost per km or mile + parking · transit: 2 × fare, then + lunch and coffee
Money per year
cost per office day × office days per week × working weeks
Value of your time
hours per year × your hourly value
One more remote day per week
the same figures for a single weekly office day: 2 trips × working weeks
What the numbers leave out
The calculator counts direct costs only. It does not price the car you might not need, childcare that has to cover the extra hours, or the energy a long trip takes out of the rest of the day. For the wider picture, read the true cost of commuting.
Turning the result into a remote day
The “extra remote day” figure is the one to bring to your manager. It is concrete, it is yours, and it shows what changes if a single office day becomes a home day. Pair it with evidence that the work gets done either way, and the conversation is about output instead of presence. Our guide on how to convince your boss to let you work remotely walks through that pitch step by step.
Show the work, not the commute
DoneThat captures what you get done, automatically and privately, so a remote day speaks for itself.
