The short answer

Memtime's defining claim is that your data never leaves your machine. Automatic tracking, unlimited local history, and an explicit statement that nothing is uploaded to the cloud.

If offline is a hard requirement — a policy, a client contract, or a straightforward preference — that settles it, and DoneThat cannot match it. What Memtime does not do is interpret the work: it captures activity accurately and leaves assigning it to projects, and drawing conclusions from it, to you.

The offline argument

The trade is real too, and Memtime is upfront about the architecture rather than the consequences: local-only means no cross-device sync and no web access to your own data. If you work across two machines, you have two separate records.

DoneThat's position is different rather than better: screenshots are never stored — processed in real time, immediately deleted, only derived structured activity persists. Excluded apps are redacted on your machine before anything is sent. With your own Gemini or OpenAI-compatible model, raw activity never reaches our servers. The desktop app is open source.

That last option is the closest we come to Memtime's guarantee, and it is not the same thing. If "nothing leaves the machine, ever" is the requirement, Memtime meets it and we do not.

Two notes. Memtime quotes in EUR, USD and GBP rather than dollars with a conversion surprise at checkout, which is more considerate than most. And phone call tracking is Premium only — roughly double Basic — so if calls are why you are evaluating it, price the top tier.

At €12 per seat per month billed annually, Memtime is at the more expensive end of automatic trackers. The offline architecture is what you are paying for.

Recording versus interpreting

Both products capture automatically with no timer. The difference is what arrives.

Memtime hands you an accurate timeline of applications, documents and calendar activity, which you then assign to projects. The assignment is yours, so it is correct — and it is work.

DoneThat reconstructs what the work was about, which is what makes the coaching layer possible: Don can tell you that you drifted off a stated goal because the reconstruction knows what you drifted onto. Nothing to assign, and something that reaches out during the work rather than presenting a timeline afterwards.
