Minutes to decimal chart
Every minute from 1 to 60 as a fraction of an hour. Use the two-place column for a timesheet, and the four-place column when you need to see where a value was rounded. For a time over an hour, add the whole hours: 3 hours 25 minutes is 3 + 0.42 = 3.42.

Decimal hours to minutes
The other way round, for the values you see most on pay stubs and time reports. Each tenth of an hour is exactly 6 minutes. Values like 0.33 and 0.67 are themselves rounded, so they come back a fraction of a minute off.

How to convert minutes to decimal hours
An hour has 60 minutes, so a minute is one sixtieth of an hour. To turn minutes into decimal hours, divide them by 60. To convert a time like 7 hours 45 minutes, divide only the minutes and add the whole hours back on. Going the other way, multiply the part after the decimal point by 60.
Minutes to decimal hours
decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60
Hours and minutes to decimal hours
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Decimal hours to minutes
minutes = decimal part × 60 (whole hours stay as they are)
With seconds
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600
Worked examples
- 7 hours 45 minutes: 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7 + 0.75, so 7.75 hours.
- 8 hours 20 minutes: 8 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8 + 0.3333…, so 8.33 hours.
- 2 hours 5 minutes: 2 + 5 ÷ 60 = 2 + 0.0833…, so 2.08 hours.
- 135 minutes: 135 ÷ 60, so 2.25 hours.
Minutes past 60 work the same way. 135 minutes is 2 hours 15 minutes, and 135 ÷ 60 gives 2.25 in one step, so you do not need to split off the hours first.
Why payroll uses decimal hours
Pay is hours times a rate, and you cannot multiply a clock time. 8 hours 30 minutes at $20 an hour is not 8:30 × $20; it is 8.5 × $20 = $170.00. Spreadsheets and payroll systems work the same way, which is why so many timesheets and time reports ask for decimal hours rather than hours and minutes.
The slip to avoid is copying the clock digits into a decimal field. 8:30 written as 8.30 looks close, but 8.30 hours is only 8 hours 18 minutes. At $20 an hour that pays $166.00 instead of $170.00, so $4 short for the day and $20 over a five-day week. The converter above shows the clock form and the decimal form side by side, and spells out the difference.
Rounding decimal hours
Two kinds of rounding come up, and it helps to keep them apart.
- Rounding the decimal. Most minutes do not divide evenly into hundredths of an hour. 1 minute is 0.016666… hours, which shows as 0.02 at two places. For whole minutes the rounded value is never more than 12 seconds off. That is harmless on one line but adds up on a long list. Three 20-minute tasks are exactly 1 hour, yet 0.33 + 0.33 + 0.33 = 0.99. Add up the minutes first and convert the total once; the list converter above does this and tells you when the rounded rows would disagree.
- Rounding the time itself. Some time clocks round each punch instead of recording the exact minute. US federal rules accept rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour or quarter of an hour, as long as over time it does not leave people unpaid for time they actually worked (29 CFR 785.48(b)). Tenths and quarters convert neatly: a tenth is 6 minutes (0.1 hours) and a quarter is 15 minutes (0.25). To round punches before you total them, use the work hours calculator.
State rules and company policy can be stricter than the federal rule. This page does the arithmetic; it is not legal advice.
Decimal hours to hours and minutes
A pay stub or time report that says 6.4 hours does not mean 6 hours 40 minutes. Keep the whole number as the hours, then multiply what is after the decimal point by 60:
- 6.4 hours: 0.4 × 60 = 24, so 6 hours 24 minutes (6:24).
- 8.3 hours: 0.3 × 60 = 18, so 8 hours 18 minutes (8:18).
- 7.33 hours: 0.33 × 60 = 19.8, which rounds to 20, so 7 hours 20 minutes (7:20).
When the answer is not a whole number of minutes, as with 7.33, the decimal was rounded somewhere along the way, and rounding the minutes back to the nearest whole one gets you the original time. For a full week of clock-in and clock-out times, the timesheet calculator gives both forms at once, with overtime.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, 20 minutes is 0.33 and 50 minutes is 0.83. For a time with hours, add the result to the whole hours: 3 hours 45 minutes is 3.75 hours.
What is 7 hours and 45 minutes in decimal?
7.75 hours. 45 minutes is three quarters of an hour, so 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, and 7 + 0.75 = 7.75.
How do I convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as the hours and multiply the part after the decimal point by 60 to get the minutes. 6.4 hours is 6 hours and 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 6:24. If the minutes are not a whole number, round them: 7.33 hours is 7 hours 19.8 minutes, so about 7:20.
Is 8.30 hours the same as 8 hours 30 minutes?
No. 8.30 decimal hours is 8 hours 18 minutes, because 0.3 × 60 = 18. 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours. Mixing the two up is the most common timesheet mistake, so check which format your form asks for.
How many minutes is 0.1 hours?
6 minutes, because 0.1 × 60 = 6. Every tenth of an hour is 6 minutes, so 0.2 is 12 minutes, 0.5 is 30 and 0.9 is 54. Quarter hours are 0.25 (15 minutes), 0.50 (30) and 0.75 (45).
How many decimal places should I use for hours?
Two is the usual format on timesheets, and it is what the converter shows unless you pick 3 or 4. When you add up many entries, add the minutes first and convert the total once: three 20-minute tasks are 1.00 hour, but adding 0.33 three times gives 0.99.
Does the converter save what I type?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere, so the values are gone when you close the page. Download the CSV from the list converter if you want to keep a copy.
