Overview

AI assistants are the starting point for most workplace AI adoption: use them to brainstorm, challenge ideas, analyze questions, draft text, and build judgment by comparing responses across tools.

What it is, how it works

  • AI chatbots that can answer any question and write any text
  • Best to brainstorm, challenge ideas, give feedback, create drafts
  • For harder questions, ask a few to get a range of opinions

When not to use it

  • Careful with confidential data. Review policies.
  • Don't trust anything they say. Double-check and build trust slowly.
  • Copy-paste their writing verbatim. It often "feels like AI"

How to get started

  • If you are using Google Workspace, start with Gemini (included)
  • For better integrations, try Claude side by side
  • Use Microsoft's copilot for best integration with MS products
  • Keep experimenting, they all change fast

Best practices / further reading

  • Understand their key limitations
  • Set up projects to avoid repeating yourself
  • Give them access to your data via MCP
  • If you catch yourself asking it to do the same thing twice, write skills
